Rebels of Peace

Tiokasin Ghosthorse is a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation of South Dakota. He is a master of the ancient red cedar Lakota flute, incorporating spoken word to tell stories of American Indian culture. Tiokasin is the host of First Voices Indigenous Radio on WBAI NY and has been a dedicated proponent of Indigenous rights activism throughout his life. Since he spoke at the United Nations in Geneva as a teenager, he has continued teaching the importance of the relationships we have to each other and to Mother Earth. Wie die Flöte zu den Menschen kam

"Einst verirrte sich ein kleiner Indianerjunge im Wald. Der Große Geist sah ihn, hatte Mitleid und beschloß ihn zu trösten und ihm ein Geschenk zu machen. Vom Himmel schickte er einen Vogel, der sich auf den hohlen Ast eines großen Baumes setzte. Darunter im Schatten des Baumes saß der Junge.

Als nun der Wind durch den hohlen Ast wehte ertönte ein wunderschönes, seltsames Geräusch, das der Junge so noch nie zuvor gehört hatte. Als er hinauf sah, erblickte er den Vogel, der nun begann nach und nach kleine Löcher in den Ast zu picken. Mit jedem Loch änderte sich der Ton und der Junge erkannte, dass das wunderschöne Geräusch aus dem Ast kam und ein Geschenk des Großen Geistes war. Er kletterte auf den Baum hinauf, brach vorsichtig den Ast ab, blies hinein und ahmte so den Klang des Windes nach. Später als er zu seinem Dorf zurückfand, erzählte er allen von seinem seltsamen Erlebnis "

So kam die Flöte einst zu den Menschen und deshalb sitzt immer ein kleiner Vogel auf ihr.

How the flute came to people

"Once a little Indian boy got lost in the woods. The Great Spirit saw him, felt sorry for him and decided to comfort him and give him a present. From heaven he sent a bird to sit on the hollow branch of a large tree. Below him, in the shadow of the tree, sat the boy.

Now as the wind blew through the hollow branch, a beautiful, strange sound was heard that the boy had never heard before. When he looked up, he saw the bird, which now began to peck little holes in the branch. With each hole the sound changed and the boy realized that the beautiful sound came from the branch and was a gift from the Great Spirit. He climbed up the tree, carefully broke off the branch, blew into it and imitated the sound of the wind. Later, when he found his way back to his village, he told everyone about his strange experience".

So the flute once came to the people and therefore always a small bird sits on it.
